HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In California, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

• Windshield - Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
• Front Side Windows - Must allow more than 70% of light in.
• Back Side Windows - Any darkness can be used.
• Rear Window - Any darkness can be used.

HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN CALIFORNIA?
Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.

• Front Side Windows - Must not be more reflective than a standard window.
• Back Side Windows - Must not be more reflective than a standard window.

OTHER CALIFORNIA RULES AND REGULATIONS
• Restricted Colors - The tint color(s) of RED are not legal by state law.
• Side Mirrors - Dual side mirrors are required if back window is tinted.
• Certificate Requirements - Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.
• Sticker Requirements - No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.
• Medical Exemption - State law does NOT allow medical exemptions that would allow you use special tint.

Solar Heat Control

Solar control window film reduces the transmittance of light and infrared heat through glass windows and doors thereby reducing heat gain.  This feature provides the following basic consumer benefits:

A. Improves energy cooling efficiencies

B. Reduces energy consumption and utility cost

C. Improves living comfort and working conditions

D. Balances hot and cold spots in the building

Decrease Heat
Window film is the most efficient way to reduce unwanted solar heat transferring through your windows. It can provide up to 81% solar heat rejection versus untreated glass, while controlling hot spots and cooling off sun-drenched areas in your home or office.

Reduce Fading & Health Risks
Window film blocks up to 99%* of UV rays, while also significantly reducing heat. This helps to protect your valuable furnishings from fading and provides a “sunscreen”for your skin against the harmful effects of the sun.

*Our clear safety and security films block 98% or more of UV rays.

How long does it take to install film on my car?
It all depends on the number of windows that need tint as well as the type of car. As long as you use a qualified, professional window film installer, the job will usually take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

Is automotive window film installed on the inside or the outside of the glass?
Window film is always applied to the inside of the automotive glass. Installers simply use the outside of the window to cut & heat shrink the window film for a proper fit.

What film is legal for my car?
Laws pertaining to how dark you can tint your car windows vary from state to state and country to country. Check your state or country where your car is registered to find out applicable tint laws. Go towww.iwfa.com for the latest automotive tint laws.

Will window film stop all interior fading?
No. Window film will not completely eliminate fading from occurring. Depending on the type of window film that is applied, window film can reduce fading by up to 70%. It’s important to note there are multiple causes for fading – UV rays, solar heat and visible light and window film can combat all of these threats.

Will window film damage my residential dual pane windows?
As long as your professional installer uses the right type of window film, your dual pane windows should not be affected.

Does security film prevent the glass from breaking?
No. Security film does an excellent job at holding broken glass together but it cannot prevent the window from breaking if it comes in contact with a severe force (e.g. hurricane, baseball bat blow).

2011 Tax Credit for Window Film
Picture
A provision in the recent Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 has created a tax credit opportunity for window films installed in residential structures. Under the new policy, the qualifying credit is  10% of the film cost with a maximum total credit of $500. The new policy went into effect January 1, 2011 and expires December 31st of 2011.

Money in Your Pocket
A tax credit directly reduces your income tax, unlike a deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax. The credit then directly increases the tax refund you receive or decreases the amount you have to pay. Homeowners can receive a 10% credit on the costs of window film, up to $500. Installation charges do not apply.

Making it Simple
Complete IRS form 5695 and file 2010 Income Tax Returns by April 15, 2012. Forms are downloadable at www.energystar.gov, along with a list of other available energy efficiency tax credits. Maintain copies of the dealer invoice and the manufacturer's certification statement for your records.
